PURPOSE STATEMENT
A learner who has achieved this qualification will be able to perform a multiple set of roles in assisting with the maintenance of the integrity of a conserved area, by integrating operational knowledge and skills.


COURSE OUTCOMES
On achieving this qualification the learner will be able to:

Perform Area Integrity Practices
At the end of this module you will be able to: The qualifying learner is able to demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of:
1. Monitor species. 1. Field craft (map reading, tracking, survival, interpretation).
2. Establish good working relationships with local communities. 2. Appropriate legislation.
3. Maintain integrity. 3. Principles of sustainability.
4. Identify potential ecological impacts. 4. Patrol methodology.
5. Implement the Security Plan appropriate to a protected area 5. Data gathering and reporting.
  6. Criminal Procedures Act.
  7. Court procedures and functions.
  8. Arrests, court and docket preparation, weapon handling, constitutional law.
  9. Crime scene management.
  10. Handling of evidence.
  11. Elements and implementation of a Security Plan.
  12. Principles of developing good community relations.
  13. Identification of signs of illegal activity i.e. old camping sites, marks on trees, animal behaviour, boundary violations, blood trails, inappropriate fishing gear etc.
  14. Methods of infiltration (information gatherers, handlers, informants, reporting).
  15. Species identification.
  16. Basic knowledge of IEM (Integrated Environment Management) process.

**  Note on weapon handling: In order to be able to handle firearms, learners are required to have completed the SASSETA rifle handling unit standards. These unit standards are not included in the cost of the course.


DURATION & COST
The 3 week course costs R 12950-00, and includes all accommodation, meals, course learning material & training at the Southern African Wildlife College.
Course can be presented at custom dates and/or at a venue of your choice but we will have to quote separately for this and it would be dependent on there being a minimum of 10 people on a course.


WHO CAN ATTEND?
Any person from the public or private sector who would like to acquire the basic skills to operate competently to supervise a team of field rangers in a protected area.
